Congress continues to mull the budget proposal of the Obama Administration and occasionally support and opposition is found in strange places. In that proposal is the looming elimination of federal subsidies for student loan lenders.  He proposed to make all government loans, loans made by the federal government.  Traditionally credit unions were quiet participants in the subsidized student loan program but not any more.  Late last week both CUNA and NAFCU sent letters to the House Education and Labor Committee urging Congress not eliminate the government subsidies.   Both associations argued that eliminating the program would be a significant detriment to credit union members. CUNA President/CEO Dan Mica wrote “Credit unions that specialize in student lending provide a high quality service for their student members, and can provide much needed and individualized assistance if difficulties arise with regard to loan repayments.  The elimination of FFELP likely will lead to the end of credit union student lending.”
